Retainer Instructions

retainers

  • Wear your retainer at all times, until the Dr. New instructs you otherwise.
  • Make sure to take your retainer out to eat but always put it back in its case! Most retainers are lost in lunchrooms or restaurants and are expensive to replace.
  • Maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing your retainer thoroughly once a day using a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm water but avoid hot water. Brushing your retainer removes plaque and eliminates unpleasant odors. You can also incorporate an orthodontic appliance cleaner like Efferdent® to your oral health routine but this will not replace brushing.
  • When your retainer is not in your mouth, ALWAYS keep in its case. Pets are known to chew on retainers!
  • At first, it may be difficult for you to speak normally while wearing your retainer. Don’t worry, this is temporary. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to it faster.
  • Remember that retainers are breakable, so please treat yours with care. If your retainer gets lost or broken, call us immediately to make an appointment to replace it.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your retainer, or you believe it needs adjusting, call us to schedule an appointment. Please do not try to adjust it yourself.
  • Remember to always bring your retainer to your appointments, this way we can adjust if needed.
  • Retainer replacements can be very expensive. If you take care of your retainer, it can last you for years.
  • Remove your retainer when you go swimming.
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
